Coleambally BESS clears key grid milestone with its 5.3.4 letter

Risen Energy Australia’s 100 MW / 400 MWh Coleambally battery has passed the technical assessments required for grid connection, clearing the way to construction.

Risen Energy Australia’s Coleambally Battery Energy Storage System has received its 5.3.4 letter — confirmation that the project meets the performance and system-strength standards required under the National Electricity Rules — marking the completion of critical technical assessments and clearing the way for final connection agreements and construction.

The Coleambally BESS is a 100 MW / 400 MWh lithium-ion system providing four hours of storage, located about 9 km northeast of Coleambally in New South Wales, adjacent to Transgrid’s existing substation.

By storing excess energy during periods of low demand and releasing it at peak times, the project will help address the intermittency of renewable generation in the NEM. It also brings local benefits: up to 40 construction jobs over a 10-month build and a capital investment of approximately $184 million.
